About Us
GEV Chapman & Son
Our Company History
Founded by my father George
GEV Chapman & Son was established in 1979 by George Chapman on the back of his extensive experience in the pipe-organ building and renovating sector. The business grew and by 1984 George retired as a director of Leonard Reeves Organ Builders Ltd to concentrate all his time and energies on developing the fledgling business.
In 1993, John Chapman joined the family business as an employee, after graduating from Newark & Sherwood College with a Diploma in Piano Tuning, Maintenance & Repair. George concentrated on piano tuning whilst John’s main task in his early days was to carry out repairs to piano casework and their actions. In time, John’s practical piano tuning skills developed and he began to grow and service his own portfolio of customers.
Following George’s death in 1998, John took over the running of the business and after a short period of consolidation began to expand the customer base. In late 2000 he was given the opportunity to purchase a tuning round of approximately 300 customers from the widow of the late Brian Thurlow.
Shortly after this, in 2001, GEV Chapman & Son won the contract to tune the pianos at the Symphony Hall, Birmingham. At the same time, he began tuning the pianos at the National Indoor Arena (NIA), the LG Arena at the NEC and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO).
The pianos are generally Steinways and Yamahas and John was given excellent training by Steinway & Sons to bring his piano tuning techniques up to concert standard. He is now very highly regarded and is considered to be one of the premier piano tuners in the country.
In 2007, GEV Chapman & Son acquired the customers of another local tuner, Graham Cooper and in the same year, on the back of the excellent standard of tuning at the Symphony Hall, won the contract to tune the pianos at the Birmingham Town Hall.
The company has continued to go from strength to strength, with John tuning for a wide range of clients including schools, colleges, universities and private individuals, as well as his work at the Birmingham Symphony Hall, Town Hall, NIA, NEC and CBSO. John is also the tuner for concerts in the independent King Edward's School in Birmingham at their £11 million performing arts centre.

Competent & a pleasure
"John has tuned our piano for years, before that, his father, George, did it.
Both very competent and a pleasure to deal over the past 32 years..."

I wouldn't go anywhere else
"...Tuning our piano since about 1985! Lovely to work with, professional, courteous, prompt and reliable and most importantly the piano always sounds wonderful once they have finished. I wouldn't go anywhere else to get our piano tuned. Highly recommend."
